Ecological transitional belt monitored in southeastern Tibet

Since this autumn, scientists from the institute have set up more monitoring and observation systems on the Station of Southeast Tibet Alpine Environment, to know more about the mountainous regions as obstacles for transportation of water/heat brought in by monsoon and the vegetation changes thereof. In their effort, one auto-meteorological station was set up to monitor air temperature/humidity, pressure, wind speed/direction, solar isolation, precipitation, snow accumulation and soil temperature /humidity, as well as heat flux. Four groups of soil temperature/humidity data sampling system (three pieces of equipment each) were also set up along 3000m a.s.l-valley to 5000m a.s.l mountain top, to facilitate in analyzing soil temperature, water proportion variation and ecological change. Early in the summer of 2005, scientists already opened two alpine tree line observation fields, to observe unique tree species’ growth and its relevant climate factors.

Moreover, associate professor Liang Eryuan of the ITP also starts his persistent observation of cambium seasonal variation and tree growth mobility on the eastern slope of Mt Sejila. Cooperating with experts of Tibetan Plateau Ecology Institute, he also examined the species distribution and collected tree ring samples there.
