Resources, environment and eco-construction on the Tibetan Plateau discussed

The Symposium of Tibetan Plateau Resources, Environment and Eco-construction kicked off in Khashi, Xinjiang Uyuger Autonomous Region, in Oct.13th-17th, 2007. Hosted by the China Tibet Society, the symposium was memorial for the comprehensive expedition to Karakurom and Kekexili two decades ago. CTS chairman, Chinese academician Prof Zheng Du, presided over the symposium, which attracted scientific staff from national and American research institutes, as well as administrative staff from NSFC, CAS and Khashi government.

Five scientific staff, namely Liu Xifang, Qimeiduoji, Shi Peili, Tian Lide and Zhao Zhidan, were honored the sixth Sci-tech Prize for Youths on the Tibetan Plateau Research. American academician, Prof Lonnie G. Thompson from the Ohio State University, also presented his research on the symposium. His presentation focused on global climate change and ice core study, which driven the message home that climate change is occurring worldwide, and that environment and climate on the Tibetan Plateau is significant for global climate change.

After the symposium, participants also went to West Kunlun Mountains, Mutztag Ata and Tashikurgan for a comprehensive view of natural landscape and ecosystem of the region.
