ITP to collaborate with CAGS on geodynamics of the TP

Date:2012-03-06

Prof. ZHANG Zeming of the Institute of Geology Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences was invited to the ITP Beijing on Feb. 24 to conduct academic communications on the geodynamics of the Tibetan Plateau.

The visit started with an academic report by Prof. Zhang entitled “Mid-Ocean Ridge Subduction and Orogenic Dynamics”. In this report, he took examples from eastern Pacific and East China to illustrate different metamorphisms and magmatic actions associated with different geodynamical environment. He then shared with the audience his latest findings in the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, and proposed the importance of existing evidences of Neotethys mid-ocean ridge subduction in South Tibetan Plateau to studying tectonic evolution in the region. Audience later exchanged notes with him concerning the identification of mid-ocean ridge subduction and detailed approaches in field work.

With the Tibetan Plateau also hypothesized as a result of Neotethys subduction, his experience in this regard is believed to help in the interpretation of Neotethys subduction and continental collision in the formation of the TP. Further cooperation between ITP and CAGS is believed to follow along this track.
