Education and Appointments
Dr. AN Baosheng was born in Tai’an, Shandong Province. He is the deputy director of the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ITPCAS). He is also the office director of the national project Second Tibetan Plateau Expedition and Research (STEP) and the Strategic Priority Research Program Pan-Third Pole Environment Study for a Green Silk Road (Pan-TPE) of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dr. An carried out research on ecological footprints and carrying capacity of Tibetan Plateau, which explored changes in the ecological carrying capacity of the Tibetan regional system and evaluated the role of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in these changes. His research indicated a surplus in regional ecological account notwithstanding a yearly decrease, and revealed that the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has increased the carrying capacity of Tibet. His findings have become the scientific basis for efforts to build a regional ecological buffer zone and to promote regional sustainability.
Dr. An also conducted assessment of ecological assets across the Yarlung Zangbo River Basin. In the aftermath of an ice collapse near the Yarlung Zangbo River, he actively engaged in post-disaster expedition and assessment organized by the STEP. His work produced science-based solutions for resident relocation and facilitated the development of a regional early-warning system.
