TPE-GHP Joint Workshop Held in Kathmandu

The TPE-GHP (GEWEX Hydroclimate Panel-GHP)Joint Workshop was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 17 to 19 October, 2017. In total, the workshop received 48 scientists, 14 from GHP, 14 from TPE and 20 from Nepal. The workshop was supported by the Kathmandu Center for Research and Education (KCRE) of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tribhuvan University as well.

This workshop consists of sessions focusing on: TPE and GEWEX progresses, Atmospheric circulation in high-latitude and the Third Pole region, Third Pole land-surface interaction, remote sensing and data retrieval for complex landscape of Third Pole, water resource and water cycle in high-latitude and the Third Pole region, climate modelling and future projection in Third Pole region, Natural hazards and human adaptation in Third Pole region, GHP projects progress report etc. In total, scientists across the world contributed more than 30 high-quality oral presentations.

The Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) is a WCRP (World Climate Research Programme) research program intended to observe, analyze and simulate the water-energy exchanges between land and atmosphere globally and regionally. During the meeting, the mechanism and research topics for future cooperation were discussed between TPE and GHP. Following agreements are reached:
1)  TPE will conduct a new GHP crosscutting project named: TPE Water Sustainability Crosscutting
2)  TPE Water Sustainability Crosscutting will include 3 parts: I) provide higher resolution climate model products for the Third Pole region; II) water -energy exchanges and transport over the Third Pole region; III) Hydrological cycle over the Third Pole region.

Background: Established in 1990, GEWEX is one of the most important research programme focusing on regional and global energy-water exchanges. It is dedicated to observing and modelling the water cycle and energy fluxes at the surface and in the atmosphere, and the impacts of climate change on land-air-water coupling at continental and middle scales. GEWEX has four key panels: GEWEX Hydroclimate Panel-GHP, GEWEX Radiation and Atmospheric Composition Panel-GDAP, Land/Atmosphere System Study Panel-GLASS and Atmospheric System Studies Panel-GASS.
