PI: Tandong Yao, Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences Period:2014-2016 Funded by Chinese Academy of Sciences Built on the cooperation between ITPCAS and relevant research institutes in India and Nepal, the project studies glaciers and lakes in Third Pole with in-situ observation and remote sensing. It looks into the glacier- lake interaction and its environmental effects in the north-south section of the Third Pole. The study covers the area across Qilian, East Kunlun, Himalaya, and Tanggula mountains, which encompasses Tibet (China), Langtang Basin(Nepal) and the South Slope of the Himalayas (India). From north to south, this region’s dominant climate controller changes from westerlies to westerly&monsoon and then to monsoon. This chosen area is densely populated by glaciers and lakes, which are in strong interaction with each other.
