Sino-German joint study of TPE to be further supported by BMBF


The second Sino-German workshop on Third Pole Environment (TPE) kicked off in Beijing on April 30, 2010, welcoming German scientists and some officials from the BMBF (German Ministery of Science and Technology) to conduct deep conversation with ITP scientists on further way ahead for Third Pole Environment (TPE) study.

Scientists from both China and Germany first briefed each other on their recent engagement in the TPE study. In particular, Prof. MA Yaoming, ITP deputy director, introduced latest achievement by the ITP research staff, focusing on the achievement made under the umbrella of the ongoing TPE program of CAS. Prof. ZHU Liping reported on the status quo in TORP (Tibetan Observation and Research Platform) construction. 

Scientific staff from both sides then exchanged notes on academic activities and achievement in the TPE study, as Prof. Appel Erwin of Tuebingen University introduced the undergoing TiP project funded by DFG, and Prof. FANG Xiaomin reported on the ongoing Sino-German joint drilling project in Tsaidam Basin and latest understanding thereupon of regional paleo-climate and -environment.

 Besides, Prof. YAO Tandong, PI on the Chinese side, and Volker Mosbrugger, that on the German side also voiced their satisfactory with the joint study, as well as expectations to promote the Sino-German cooperation to help government in respect of  correlation between geosciences and sustainable development.

Having acquainted themselves with the ongoing research and high-level academic achievement in the Sino-German cooperation in TPE study, the BMBF representatives thought highly of the cooperation. They thus promised to sort out more ways to further push forward the Sino-German joint effort in unraveling the mystery of TPE.
