Lonnie Thompson wins Award for International Scientific Cooperation of the CAS for 2011


Lonnie Thompson, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and deputy director of the ITP academic advisory committee, was recently awarded for International Scientific Cooperation of the CAS for 2011.

Prof. Thompson has been engaged in ice core palaeoclimatology since the 1970s. His cooperation with Chinese glaciologists dated back to 1984. Ever since his cooperation with Chinese scientists, he has been actively involved in young talents cultivation for China, making use of joint field expeditions, and televised video web-cam devices, as well as inviting young Chinese scholars to work and learn in his lab. His cooperation with Chinese scientists have harvest in a mature research team in China in ice core study, and numerous high-impact papers in such high-level journals as Science, Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Geophysical Research and etc.

Initiated in 2007, the Award for International Scientific Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is to commend and honor those eminent foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to facilitating cooperation with CAS in science and technology, in an attempt to encourage more efforts in this respect that will strengthen CAS’s science and technology innovation capacity and lead to improvement in its research performance, education & training, management, and reputation in the international scientific community. So far, 14 foreign experts have won this award for their contribution to Chinese scientific community.
