Glacial Climate and Environment on the Tibetan Plateau and the Modernization of Ice Sphere Tested and Appraised

On the morning of 28th, July, a program jointly carried out by CAREERI and ITP got tested and appraised by specialists’ group of CAS’s Lanzhou Branch, organized by Office of Science and Technology in Lanzhou. This program—Glacial Climate of High Resolution on the Plateau and the Modernization of Ice Spheres—has been reported to a specialists’ group headed by Prof. Li Jijun, academician of CAS, who then with other members posed some questions concerning the research and agreed to approve the scientific fruit after thorough discussion.

Agreeing on the significance of research to ice cores and ice spheres on the Tibetan Plateau to the understanding of Asian Monsoon and Global Climate System, the specialists’ group praised highly the achievement done by researchers within this program. Their remarkable work has led to such important breakthroughs as follows:

1)      They re-established climate changing process and environmental events since the Last sub-Ice Age, which is of high resolution;

2)      They interpreted the climate change over the past 2000 years on the Tibetan Plateau;

3)      Their long-term, large-scale monitoring and observation led them to discover that isotopic change in precipitation in both the northern and southern regions on the Plateau is controlled by the “greenhouse effect”;

4)      They characterized the features of Indian Monsoon change;

5)      Many of their research fields are new and promising to our study of ice cores and environment in China.

The scientific fruits of this program have been published in many famous scientific journals such as Science, Journal of Geophysical Research, Journal of Glaciology, Quaternary International, Climate Change, Palaeogeology, Palaeoclimotology and Palaeoecology, Chinese Science. Their academic authority has been constantly identified by 469 times’ quotation by database in Science and 221 times’ quotation in Chinese theses database. It is undeniable that their research achievement has played an important role in global study in the same field.
