ITPCAS scientists reached out to Pakistan counterpart---- Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Under the invitation of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), a delegate of the ITPCAS including Profs Yaoming Ma, Chaolu Yi, Jingshi Liu and Qinghua Ye visited the SUPARCO headquarter in Karachi, Pakistan from 23, May to 5, June , 2009.

During the visit, scientific staff from both sides introduced to each other the general operation of each of their research institutes, exchanged ideas on the study of glacial variation, atmospheric physics, as well as geological hazards like landslide, earthquake, and glacial lake out-bursting. Prof. Ma of the Institute also briefed scientific and administrative staff present during the bilateral communication the ITP’s international project on the third pole environmental study.

Both sides finally reached an initial agreement to jointly study the glacial variation, atmosphere and glacial melting, monitor the water resources and potential geological hazards, acquire remote sensing data, conduct field expedition and etc. Some short-term training programs were also proposed for young scientific staff on both sides, so as to boost relevant studies at respective nations.
