International experts gathered in Beijing for multidisciplinary study of the Tibetan Plateau


During August 11 to 14, 2009, the joint conference of the 5th international symposium on the Tibetan Plateau and the 24th Himalaya-Karakorum-Tibet workshop kicked off in Beijing, gathering over Chinese academicians, internationally acknowledged Tibetan Plateau research scholars, and administrative staff from People’s Government of Tibet Autonomous Regions (TAR), Standing Committee of Qinghai People’s Congress, and various bureaus within Chinese Academy of Sciences. The joint conference, jointly sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Land and Resources of PRC and People’s Government of TAR, was presided over by Chinese Academician Prof. Sun Honglie, witnessing the participation of about 430 participants from over twenty countries or regions worldwide.
Theme by ‘plateau uplift, environmental evolution and regional development, the joint conference focused on the following subjects as 1)internal processes and continental collision, 2) geological evolution and mining resources formation, 3) plateau uplift and environmental changes, 4) land surface processes and their interaction with global changes, and 5) resources and environment on the Tibetan Plateau and social-economic development.
In the plenary session, eight distinguished scholars as Mike Searle, Volker Mosbrugger and etc. shared with the audience their achievement in the study of the geology and environment on the plateau. During the joint conference, 16 parallel sessions were conducted, inviting specific and in-depth discussions on certain particular research subject relating to the Tibetan Plateau research. A four-hour poster session also supplemented the academic contents and broadened the exchange realm. After the joint conference in Beijing, 45 participants from both home and abroad went on expeditions to Tibet to better acquaint themselves with the Plateau geology and environment.
The next such joint conference will be held in Germany.
