Study of Atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) on the Tibetan Plateau reviewed in Lanzhou

“Workshop on a Review of ABL Studies in the Arid Area and Tibetan Plateau” was held in Lanzhou October 26-28, 2012. The workshop featured three major topics, including complex land surface and boundary layer structures in high elevation areas, land-air interactions in arid areas and the Tibetan Plateau, and energy-water cycle in the monsoon region and interior rivers drainage areas.

Prof. WANG Jiemin addressed the plenary session with an academic report entitled “Limitations of the Eddy-Covariance Method in Flux Observations”. Well experienced in the ABL study in arid northwestern China and the Tibetan Plateau, Prof. Wang shared his experience in studying atmospheric physics and land surface processes in the past half century, focusing particularly on major achievements from the Heihe river basin Field Experiment (HEIFE) and GAME-Tibet, CAMP-Tibet projects. He also hoped that young scientists would aim high and achieve great in jointly promoting China’s ABL study to the international high level.

The workshop was co-sponsored by the ITPCAS and CAREERI. About 20 scientific staff from ITP attended the conference, presenting six oral presentations which aroused wide attention among participants. Present at the workshop were also distinguished international experts such as Prof. Massimo Menenti from TU Delft, the Netherlands, Prof. Bob Su from the University of Twente, the Netherlands, Dr. Hirohiko Ishikawa of the Kyoto University, and Dr. Tetsuo Kobayashi of the Tottori University. Over 80 research staff attended the workshop from home and abroad.
